This is a work in progress document and some has not yet reflected the findings we've collected in our Philippine Internet Review publication.   1. Magoos.com (http://www.magoos.com) is the first Philippine food site launched in December 1996. It offered online ordering service through the Internet. It won the Philippine Webby Awards 1997 for best e-commerce site.
  2. Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, PLO Leader Yasser Arafat, and former Philippine President Fidel Ramos meet for ten minutes in an online interactive chat session. PHNet (http://www.ph.net) provided a 128K link to Malacanang and PLDT provided the 128K leased line from PHnet. (January 17, 1996)

  9. In December 1996, the first local transactional e-commerce site - Magoos.com went online. It is also the first food site and online pizza delivery service in Asia. It won the 1997 Philippine Webby Awards best e-commerce site of the year.

  11. First commercial Internet bank (transactional) is the now defunct Urban Bank. (1996)

1997

  1. Broadcast network GMA-7's program Probe invited journalists and broadcasters to a two-hour chat session concerning issues the country is facing. The relay chat session was the first of its kind for Philippine television. (September 13, 1997)
  2. First search-enabled web directory - EDSA.com.ph (now called EDSAWorld) went online. (1997)
  3. Recognizing the growing influence and popularity of the Internet, Bankard ONLINE, Bankard Inc.'s own website, came on line in March 1997 at www.Bankard.com. Bankard ONLINE was the first website by a credit card company in the Philippines.
  4. Titik Pilipino (www.titikpilipino.com), launched in 1997, is the 1st Filipino Lyric Server providing OPM lyrics to thousands of homesick Filipinos worldwide and music enthusiasts while promoting Filipino music as well.
  5. Mach1! was the first website dedicated to auto enthusiasts. (1997) The site no longer exist. Visitors of Mach1 have decided to create a new site called "mach2" to continue the legacy (http://drive.to/mach2) and was online almost immediately after mach1 went down.
  6. First local online grocery site - Rustans.com (1997).

 

1998

  1. Bert is Evil (http://www.fractalcow.com/bert/bert.htm) won a prestigious Webby Award (http://www.webbyawards.com) in San Francisco. Dino Ignacio is the first Filipino to won a Webby Award. (March 6, 1998)
  2. The first free and commercial web-based e-mail service is PinoyMail.com (http://www.pinoymail.com) went online. (1998)
  3. Federal Express Corp. (FedEx) made available in the Philippines its Internet shipping service, allowing customers to prepare shipment documentation for consignments through the Internet. (August 1998)
  4. Philippine Webby Awards (http://www.webbyawards.com.ph) had its first event of its kind in the country. (December 9, 1998)
  5. WG&A launched first shipping web site (http://www.wgasuperferry.com). (1998)
  6. The first shopping site where payment is processed locally online is BeerOnline (http://draft.sanmiguelbeer.com/). (1998)

  1. PhilAuction.com first to offer full-blown online auction service. (June 1999)
  2. Manila's first domain name dispute took place as the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (http://www.pldt.com.ph) sues Gerry Kaimo (http://www.pldt.com) and Philippine League for Democratic Telecommunications Inc. (http://www.pldti.org). (September 1999)
  3. BalikBayanMail.com (http://www.balikbayanmail.com) launched first online parcel service for OFWs. (1999)
  4. Medilink (http://www.medilink.com.ph) launched first computerized claims clearing house network system for hospitals, HMOs, health insurers, self-insured corporations, clinics, and independent physicians associations. (1999)
  5. Authoriz.net launched first local credit card payments solutions service. (1999)

 

2000

  1. One Virtual Corporation launched the "1st 2-way satellite" internet connection from the Internet backbone (in the US via PanamSat-8) to the Philippines, connecting at least thirty (30) clients during the first semester of 2000.
  2. GoPinoy.com launched first full .ph search engine. (February 2000)
  3. Imelda Marcos (http://www.shastaweb.com/Jewels/) missing jewels exposed online. (June 2000)
  4. Estore-exchange.com pioneered in mobile e-commerce through their over the air reload of prepaid phone cards. (July 2000)
  5. Zurich Philippines (http://www.zurich.com.ph) is the first transactional insurance web site. It went online last March 2000.
  6. The first Philippine spoof site is Ispup.com (http://www.ispup.com). Its first WebIspup is the Philippine Wet Awards 2000.
  7. http://www.doggiehaus.com, launched on January 2, 2000, by Labrador-Retriever owner-lovers and husband and wife, Fred and Joy Utanes, is the Philippine's First Canine Directory. (January 2000)
  8. In the year 2000, there's an estimated 1.113 million computers in the country according to IDC.

 

 

2001

  1. CYBER CEBU, INC.(www.cybercebu.com)is the first Internet Service Provider in South Cebu (JANUARY 24,2001).
  2. The first Philippine Bikini website - www.bikini.ph. (2001)
  3. Pioneering internet access in Mountain Province. XiJEN Institute of Technology, a computer school registered with the TESDA provides internet access to its students and the community using a satellite link to the internet. In a way, it helped narrow the digital divide gap for rural areas in the Philippines that have been shunned by ISPs. The satellite link using VSAT technology was set up in Bontoc (the province's capital town) on November 6, 2001.
  4. Bidshot.com launched first auction site with SMS capability. (January 2001)
  5. The Philippine Schools Cyberfair Competition (http://www.cyberfair.ph) is the 1st competition of its kind localy where elementary and high school institutions can submit entries that speaks of their community. (2001)
  6. Electronic Yellow Pages (E-Yellowpages), the online version of the country's yellow pages was publicly launched in 2001. The mobile phone version (via SMS and WAP) was made available in late 2002. (www.e-yellowpages.ph)
  7. Chikka Instant Messenger (http://www.chikka.com) was launched. It is the first Filipino company to developed an Internet/mobile phone based instant messaging software.

 

2002

  1. Zurich Philippines (http://www.zurich.com.ph) is the first insurance site that offers an affiliate program, ePartner, where one can register online and start integrating the code in one's website. No purchase necessary. Affiliate points can be used to buy items in accredited local online stores. (2002)

 

2005

  1. E-Yellowpages Mobile was re-launched as LUK4 Mobile E-Yellowpages, the mobile phone version of the yellowpages, in November 2005.(www.e-yellowpages.ph)

 

2006

  1. First SEO competition in the Philippines was launched by Marc Macalua (http://www.macalua.com).
  2. The Philippines has nearly 5.6 million Filipino online gamers and US$14 million in revenues, according to International Data Corporation.
  3. PEPComChannel is 1st cable community channel to be online.
  4. Paypal (http://www.paypal.com) accepts Philippines-based Internet users to register and send money through the service.
  5. Aboitiz Equity Ventures launched Txoko (http://www.aboitiz.com/Site/Txoko/BlogsAndForums.aspx), a social networking site that provides a medium for the conglomerate, that has 20,000 employees, to interact with one another.
  6. Kababayan (http://www.kababayan.ph) was launched this year.
  7. US-based Donald Deverso was sentenced to 16 years and 3 months for receiving child pornography as well as owning and making child pornography. He was arrested in April 2005 after returning from the Philippines and customs officials found explicit photos of underage girls on his digital camera. Investigators later found more images on his computer and some computer discs. He took images of the girl, including shots of her lying nude on a rumpled bed.
  8. Filipino bloggers found new revenue opportunities with ReviewMe (http://www.reviewme.com).
  9. There's 24% PC penetration among small business in the Philippines at this time.
  10. Government issues guidelines on electronic payment for government transactions. This is the Department of Trade and Industry and Department of Finance Joint Administrative Order #2 titled as Electronic Payment and Collection System in Government.
  11. Rex Hermogino (http://www.rexnfx.com/) became Yahoo's first Talent Show winner.

 

2007

  1. Chiz Escudero (http://www.chizescudero.com) is the first politician to launch an election campaign by having a live chat conference with interested Internet users. (February 13, 2007)

  12. DFNN.com is the first local dotcom that went for an initial public offering (IPO).
  13. QuickWeb (http://www.quickweb.com.ph) is the first prepaid Internet card in the Philippines.
  14. PostWish (http://www.postwish.com) is the first all-occasion gift registry/wishlist in the Philippines.
  15. BahayKo.com (http://www.bahayko.com is the first web site that offers an almost complete portal resource from news, grocery, airline tickets, money remittance, e-cards, calendar, chat, web-based email, free webspace with online web authoring tools, among others.
  16. Alecx Estrada Homey Home Page is the first Filipino webpage done by the artist herself that includes some sound clips from her latest releases. Her url was the first to appear in an album cover.
